Large-strain analysis of undrained smooth tube sampling

Borehole tube sampling is a key process of geotechnical engineering. The paper presents numerical analyses smooth in clay using the particle finite-element method. soil described by conventional elasto-plastic constitutive model (Tresca plasticity and quasi-incompressible elastic law). sampler advanced several diameters into until steady state observed. solution for round-tipped clearly identifies localised shear failure mechanism at entrance tube. Relevant strain path method (SPM) solutions are numerically evaluated to facilitate full field comparison. For given thickness ratio simulation predicts far less compression but much larger extensions centreline than SPM. results also show how including bevelled tip or stationary piston changes significantly reduces induced peak extension strains. agree with available experimental data well-established empirical observations. methodology presented may open way mechanics-based rational approach simulation.
